Zespół Renault w Formule 1 zadebiutował w roku 1977, kiedy to wystawiono bolid dla Jean-Pierre’a Jabouille’a w Grand Prix Wielkiej Brytanii. Samochód ten, oznaczony symbolem RS01, był pierwszym samochodem w historii Formuły 1 z silnikiem turbodoładowanym i oponami radialnymi. Pierwsze punkty dla Renault zdobył Jean-Pierre Jabouille, dojeżdżając na czwartym miejscu w Grand Prix Stanów Zjednoczonych w sezonie 1978. Rok później, podczas Grand Prix Francji ten sam kierowca wywalczył dla teamu pierwsze zwycięstwo. W latach 1980–1982 zespół Renault był jedną ze stron w konflikcie FISA-FOCA. Po sezonie 1985 zespół wycofał się z zawodów Formuły 1, a wrócił do nich w sezonie 2002, wykupując wcześniej Benettona. W latach 2005–2006 zespół Renault zdobył tytuły mistrzowskie w klasyfikacji kierowców (mistrzem został kierowca Renault, Fernando Alonso), oraz konstruktorów, stając się drugim po Matrze francuskim konstruktorem, który tego dokonał. W trakcie 23 lat startów (do sezonu 2019 włącznie) zespół uczestniczył w 383 wyścigach Grand Prix, zdobywając 1596 punktów.

Wyniki Najlepszym okresem dla Renault były lata 2005–2006, gdy za kierownicą bolidów francuskiego konstruktora ścigali się Fernando Alonso oraz Giancarlo Fisichella. W obu sezonach zarówno w klasyfikacji generalnej kierowców (za sprawą Fernando Alonso), jak i konstruktorów, Renault było na najwyższym miejscu.

Najgorszy sezon Renault miało podczas swojego debiutu w 1977 roku. Kierowcą zespołu był wówczas Francuz Jean-Pierre Jabouille, który w klasyfikacji generalnej kierowców nie został sklasyfikowany, a Renault w klasyfikacji generalnej konstruktorów zajęło 19. pozycję bez żadnego zdobytego punktu.

Bolidy Renault napędzane były silnikami własnej konstrukcji. W latach 1977–1984 opony były dostarczane przez Michelin, a w 1985 przez Goodyear. W 2002 roku zespół ponownie zadebiutował z oponami Michelin, w latach 2007–2010 opony dostarczane były przez Bridgestone, a w 2011 roku dostawcą było Pirelli. Po powrocie zespołu do stawki w 2016 dostawcą opon pozostało Pirelli.
