Wyprodukował i zmiksował nagrania wielu artystów takich jak: Blue October, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, Public Image Ltd, Kate Bush, Talking Heads, Midnight Oil, Gang of Four, Grinderman, The Living End, Silverchair, Lou Reed and Supergrass.

Historia Jest synem francuskiego pisarza André Launaya, urodził się w Londynie w Anglii około roku 1960. W wieku ośmiu lat przeprowadził się wraz z rodziną do małej wioski w Hiszpanii, gdzie jego rodzice wiedli bardzo swobodny tryb życia. Rodzina powróciła do Anglii w roku 1976 i od tego momentu Launay zakochał się w muzyce punk rock.
Od 1978 roku rozpoczął pracę w studiach Tape One na Tottenham Court Road.
W 1980 Launay związał się z Virgin Records w studiu Townhouse, gdzie pracował jako asystent inżyniera przy albumach takich jak The Jam - Sound Affects oraz XTC - Black Sea, asystując takim producentom jak John Leckie, Tony Visconti, Steve Lillywhite oraz Hugh Padgham.
W 1981, jako najmłodszy z asystentów został wyznaczony do pracy z zespołem Public Image Ltd podczas sesji nagraniowej singla „Home is Where the Heart is”. Na stronie fanów zespołu, w wywiadzie, wspominawywiad Nicka Launaya na stronie Fodderstamp (eng.), 2003, że „Żaden inny asystent reżysera w Townhouse nie chciał pracować z PiL, z powodu złej reputacji wokalisty zespołu Johnny Rottena.
