Fair Chepstow’s Castle stands embattled high Above the bosom of the winding Wye; Grey are its towers, and stern its stony face, As are the rocks wherein it hath its base; Save where the clinging ivy climbs its sides And many a scar — (by Time inflicted) — hides. The halls, that once were filled with clang of arms — The keep, that once re-echoed war’s alarms — Are silent now : — the frowning turrets high No more repeat the warder’s nightly cry — The courts — whose floors were once by heroes trod, Are carpeted with em’rald grassy sod.
