Dvanaesta Šahovska olimpijada 1956, koju je organizirala FIDE i koja se sastojala od otvorenog turnira, održana je od 31. augusta do 25. septembra u Moskvi.Šahovska olimpijada 1956. na OlimpBaseu
Turnir 140px|mini|desno|Bent Larsen, dobitnik zlatne medalje na prvoj tabli. Turnir se igrao u Pozorištu Crvene Armije u Moskvi. Na olimpijadi je nastupilo 34 ekipe sa ukupno 197 šahista, koji su igrali po Bergerovom sistemu. Ukupno su nastupili dvadestorica velemajstora. te 35-ica međunarodnih majstora i odigrano je 1220 partija (četiri po meču), a timovi su igrali na četiri table, dva su rezervna igrača bila dozvoljena. Igralo se na dva i po sata sata za prvih 40 poteza, a nakon toga sat vremena za svakih 16 poteza. Glavni sudija bio je Rus Igor Bondarevski i Finac Ari Ilmakunnas U slučaju istog broja osvojenih bodova, odlučivalo je timsko bodovanje (TB), po kojem je za pobjedu tima dodjeljivano 2 boda, za remi 1 bod i poraz nije donosio bodove, zatim broj pobjeda i međusobni odnos (MO).
Organizacija
Rezultati Pobjednik je po treći put uzastopno, nakon olimpijade 1952. i 1954. bila ekipa Sovjetskog saveza u sastavu: Mihail Botvinik sa šest pobjede i sedam remija, Vasilij Smislov (+5 −1 =7), Paul Keres, (+7 −0 =5), David Bronštejn (+9 −0 =4), Mark Tajmanov (+6 −0 =5) i Jefim Geler (+7 −2 =1). Drugo mjesto osvojili su šahisti Jugoslavije: Svetozar Gligorić (+6 −3 =7), Aleksandar Matanović (+7 −0 =9), Nikola Karaklajić (+4 −1 =4), Borislav Milić (+3 −0 =6) i Božidar Đurašević (+4 −0 =2). Treće mjesto osvojili su šahisti Mađarske: László Szabó (+6 −1 =10), Gedeon Barcza (+9 −2 =5), Pál Benkő (+6 −1 =8), György Szilágyi, (+4 −4 =1), Miklós Bély, (+4 −2 =5) i Lajos Portisch (+4 −0 =0). Najbolji igrač bio je David Bronštejn sa učinkom 84,6% i osvojenih 11 poena iz 13 partija.

Tabela Sistem takmičenja bio je sličan 8-oj, 10-oj i 11. šahovskoj olimpijadi. Timovi su bili podijeljeni u četiri grupe i to dvije sa osam ekipa i dvije grupe sa devet. U podijeli po grupama odlučivao je rejting država, tako da su jači timovi podijeljeni u sve tri grupe kao nositelji. Tri prvoplasirana iz prve runde kvalificirala su se za finalnu rundu grupe A, timovi od četvrtog do šestog za B finale, a od sedmog do osmog, odnosno devetog u C finale.
