Durante la carriera da calciatore ha vinto 14 titoli, da manager ha vinto 51 trofei.

Carriera Giocatore Dopo aver iniziato a giocare nel Glentoran, dove vince due campionati (1970 e 1972), si trasferisce in Inghilterra giocando tra la seconda e la terza divisione con le maglie di Sheffield Weds e Grimsby Town. Nel 1975 torna in Irlanda del Nord, vincendo altri tre campionati (1978, 1979 e 1980) come giocatore-allenatore del Linfield.

Il 28 marzo 1973 esordisce in Nazionale giocando contro il una sfida valida per le qualificazioni al Mondiale del 1974 conclusasi sull'1-1. Coyle gioca anche la sua ultima partita in Nazionale contro il Portogallo, sempre nel 1973: l'incontro finì 1-1.

Allenatore Allena il Linfield per quindici anni, vincendo dieci campionati nazionali e tre Irish Cup. In seguito allena anche Ards e Derry City prima di approdare al Glentoran: con questo club vince altri tre campionati nordirlandesi e quattro Irish Cup. Nel 2006-2007 guida il Newry City.
