Stagione Novità Al posto delle retrocesse , , e sono saliti dalla First Division il e, dopo i play-off, il , così da portare il numero di squadre partecipanti al campionato a 20. Formula Per mantenere il numero di squadre attuali fu ripristinata la retrocessione per le ultime tre squadre invece che quattro. Avvenimenti La prima parte di stagione fu favorevole al , che, grazie ad una impressionante striscia di risultati positivi, costruì un vantaggio importante sulle inseguitrici. Dal plotone si staccò il , che vinse lo scontro diretto ad Old Trafford e riuscì a riportarsi a 4 punti dai bianconeri, prima di una serie negativa di risultati che riportò il distacco tra le prime due della classifica a 12 punti. Nelle rimanenti 14 partite, però, i Red Devils (che poterono nuovamente contare su Cantona, di ritorno dalla squalifica di 8 mesi subita nell'anno precedente) pareggiarono solamente con il e persero con il , vincendo tutte le altre partite, mentre la squadra di Kevin Keegan non seppe sopportare la pressione della lotta per il titolo e cadde ripetutamente: esiziali furono le sconfitte nello scontro diretto del St James' Park e quella rocambolesca per 4-3 maturata ad Anfield. Dissolto il vantaggio, il Newcastle si ritrovò secondo per differenza reti, ma non riuscì neanche a vincere le ultime due gare di campionato e così lo United vinse il suo terzo titolo in quattro anni di Premier League. Il chiuse il torneo al terzo posto davanti all', mentre le squadre londinesi faticarono ancora una volta, non riuscendo mai ad inserirsi nella lotta per le posizioni di vertice. In coda, condannate da tempo il neopromosso e un QPR in declino, fu il ad occupare l'ultimo posto della classifica: fatale ai Citizens fu il 2-2 dell'ultima giornata contro il Liverpool, con la squadra che, informata in modo errato dei risultati dagli altri campi, si accontentò del pareggio, trovandosi beffata a causa della peggior differenza reti nei confronti di e , due squadre specialiste in salvezze insperate.
