La stagione 2009 del Campionato del mondo rally è stata la 37ª manifestazione riconosciuta dalla FIA e dal World Rally Championship.
La competizione mondiale è stata disputata dal 30 gennaio al 25 novembre e prevedeva 12 tappe in altrettanti Paesi.
Calendario Per il campionato mondiale di rally 2009, erano previste 12 prove, tre in meno rispetto alla stagione precedente, con i ritorni o gli esordi di Polonia, Irlanda, Norvegia, Cipro, Portogallo e Australia. Invece per questa stagione non sono state previste le prove di Monte Carlo, Svezia, Messico, Giordania, Turchia, Germania, Nuova Zelanda, Francia e Giappone..

Cambiamenti nel regolamento Rispetto alla stagione 2008, nel 2009 furono apportate alcune modifiche nei regolamenti sportivo e tecnico.
Produttore (M)
Deve partecipare a tutti i rally del Campionato con due vetture della stessa marca Devono essere iscritte solo vetture corrispondenti all'ultima versione omologata di una World Rally Car in conformità con l'Appendice J del 2009 È obbligatorio comunicare alla FIA il nome del primo pilota iscritto per la stagione al momento dell'iscrizione al Campionato. Non è consentito alcun cambio del primo pilota, salvo in caso di forza maggiore. Il pilota della seconda vettura può essere cambiato per ogni rally del Campionato.
Team del produttore (MT)
Deve partecipare ad almeno 8 rally del campionato con una o due vetture; tali rally devono essere indicati al momento dell'iscrizione al campionato. Non è consentito l'utilizzo di vetture World Rally Car omologate nel corso del 2009 né di componenti omologati dopo il 2 gennaio 2009. Può accumulare punti solo negli eventi che ha indicato al momento dell'iscrizione.
Tutte le squadre hanno utilizzato pneumatici Pirelli.

Per la stagione 2009, il campionato ha due team costruttori, (Citroën Total World Rally Team e BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team), e tre team semi-ufficiali, (Stobart M-Sport Ford, Munchi's Ford e il Citroën Junior Team), che concorreranno per il Campionato Costruttori.
