Apparve in oltre ottanta pellicole realizzate tra il 1908 e il 1929, legando il suo nome in particolare alle prime produzioni storiche della Biograph Company.
Biografia Attore caratterista e di supporto, iniziò la sua carriera nel 1908 presso i bioscopi della Biograph, entrando a far parte del nucleo fisso di interpreti della compagnia. Tra il 1908 e il 1912 lavorò stabilmente sotto la direzione del regista David Wark Griffith, comparendo in decine di cortometraggi pionieristici al fianco di star dell'epoca come Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish e Mack Sennett. Tra le sue interpretazioni più rilevanti del periodo figurano The Call of the Wild (1908) e il western The Battle at Elderbush Gulch (1913).
A partire dal 1915 collaborò frequentemente con i registi Sidney Franklin e Chester M. Franklin. La sua ultima apparizione sul grande schermo risale al 1929 nel film Il richiamo della terra (The Far Call), diretto da Allan Dwan.
Morì a New York all'inizio del 1928, poco prima dell'uscita delle sue ultime pellicole a ridosso della transizione al cinema sonoro.
