Lo show è stato trasmesso sul canale televisivo statunitense CBS, ed è stato presentato da LL Cool J e Cyndi Lauper. Le candidature sono state annunciate il 6 dicembre 2013, vedendo il rapper statunitense Jay-Z in testa con nove candidature, seguito da Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis e Pharrell Williams con sette ciascuno.
I Daft Punk hanno vinto cinque premi, tra cui all'album dell'anno per Random Access Memories. Lorde è divenuta l'artista più giovane a vincere nella categoria alla canzone dell'anno per Royals.
