Biografia Nato e cresciuto nell'Illinois da genitori di origine rurale del Kentucky, dopo una parentesi in Germania come soldato si trasferì a Chicago. Dopo anni di gavetta divenne noto nella scena folk locale; fu scoperto nel 1971 da Kris Kristofferson che gli procurò un contratto con la Atlantic Records con cui pubblicò tre album. Successivamente passò alla Asylum Records per altri tre album. Fondò quindi una propria etichetta, la Oh Boy Records, con cui fece uscire i propri lavori successivi.
Prine è morto il 7 aprile 2020 all'età di 73 anni, vittima delle complicazioni da COVID-19.
