No mesmo ano, apareceu nos filmes Follow the Band, Beyond the Last Frontier, Cry 'Havoc' e Gung Ho!, além de diversos filmes da série Hopalong Cassidy, incluindo Colt Comrades, Bar 20, False Colors e Riders of the Deadline. Em 1944, estrelou o faroeste Nevada como Jim "Nevada" Lacy, e um ano depois atuou em West of the Pecos como Pecos Smith. Durante a década de 1940, também participou dos filmes noir Undercurrent (1946), Crossfire (1947), Out of the Past (1947) e The Big Steal (1949). The Story of G.I.
Mitchum interpretou o assassino em série Reverendo Harry Powell em The Night of the Hunter (1955) e o estuprador condenado Max Cady no neo-noir thriller psicológico Cape Fear (1962).
Na televisão, interpretou Victor "Pug" Henry nas minisséries The Winds of War (1983) e novamente em War and Remembrance (1988).
