Teve como campeão o britânico James Hunt da McLaren, sendo vice-campeão o austríaco Niki Lauda da Ferrari, que sofreu um grave acidente que quase lhe custou a sua vida no GP da Alemanha. O filme de 2013 Rush relata o duelo entre os dois pilotos que disputavam o título neste campeonato.
