Etimologia Pseudoscopelus prové dels mots grecs pseudes (fals) i skopelos (un peix llanterna).Romero, P., 2002. An etymological dictionary of taxonomy. Madrid (Espanya). Lütken no es va adonar de la presència de fotòfors entre els trets més característics d'aquest gènere (els va confondre amb porus) i, a causa d'això, el va anomenar així amb relació a un gènere de peixos llanternes (l'antic Scopelus, avui dia Myctophum).
