Considerato uno dei maggiori esponenti della minimal techno, Voigt ha all'attivo una discografia molto vasta. Tra i moltissimi pseudonimi da lui adottati figurano Gas, con cui ha pubblicato i suoi album più noti, Mike Inc., Love Inc., Studio 1 e M:I:5.

Biografia Nato a Colonia nel 1961, Wolfgang Voigt è attivo sin dai primi anni novanta, periodo in cui esordì come artista acid house e techno. Nel 1993 inaugurò l'etichetta Profan. Cinque anni più tardi co-fondò con alcuni amici la Kompakt, citata fra le più influenti etichette di musica elettronica tedesca del periodo. Dello stesso periodo sono delle pubblicazioni assieme a Jörg Burger e il fratello minore Reinhard Voigt.

Voigt avviò il progetto ambient techno Gas durante la metà degli anni novanta con cui firmò alcuni dei suoi album più noti, tra cui Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1999) e Pop (2000), quest'ultimo considerato l'undicesimo migliore album ambient di sempre dalla rivista Pitchfork. Secondo la medesima rivista, la quarta traccia di Pop avrebbe ispirato l'intera serie di compilation della Kompakt Pop Ambient, inaugurata nel 2001. Voigt riadotterà l'alias in Narkopop (2017), Rausch (2018) e Der Lange Marsch (2021).

Stile musicale Voigt è considerato un esponente di punta della minimal techno di Colonia, ma ha ottenuto particolare attenzione critica specialmente grazie alle sue pubblicazioni a nome Gas, considerato da molti il suo progetto musicale più influente. Adottando tale alias, il suo progetto più astratto, ispirato alle sue esperienze giovanili di consumo di LSD presso la foresta di Königsforst, Voigt si è cimentato in un'ambient techno e minimal techno che, conciliando le sonorità dell'ambient e della techno in quattro quarti, si focalizza sui droni e i loop di suoni campionati di strumenti acustici e classici. Stando alle intenzioni di Voigt, il progetto Gas aspirava a portare la «foresta tedesca nella disco e viceversa» e di proporre una «musica gassosa, catturata da una grancassa che marcia, che scorre, scorre attraverso il sottobosco attraverso il suolo della foresta». Diversi specialisti hanno offerto delle descrizioni per definire la peculiare fusione ambient e techno di Gas. Secondo Rob Young di The Wire è «un rave all'aperto, udito fluttuare nell'aria da un villaggio vicino». Nel libro Wolfgang Voigt - GAS, pubblicato dall'etichetta Raster-Noton, lo stile di tale progetto è stato definito "un corpo sonoro che spazia in qualche modo fra Wagner ed i Kraftwerk" nonché "una marcia infinita attraverso il sottobosco... di un'immaginaria foresta indistinta."
