Typový druh Melanorosaurus readi byl formálně popsán v roce 1924 paleontologem Sidney Haughtonem po objevu na severním svahu hory Thaba 'Nyama (Černá hora) v oblasti tehdejšího státu Transkei.Haughton, S. H. (1924). The fauna and stratigraphy of the Stormberg Series. Annals of the South African Museum. 12: 323-497. Byl to býložravý dinosaurus s velkým tělem, robustními končetinami a dlouhým krkem.
