Biografia Cresciuta a Tenafly, nel New Jersey, in una famiglia ebrea, Gore fu scoperta durante l'adolescenza. Il suo primo singolo, inciso all'età di 16 anni, fu It's My Party, che raggiunse nel 1963 la prima posizione della classifica Billboard Hot 100 per due settimane e il nono posto nella classifica britannica. L'anno successivo il brano fu pubblicato in una versione in lingua italiana interpretata da Richard Anthony con il titolo "La mia festa".

Tra i singoli successivi si ricordano Judy's Turn to Cry (ideato come seguito di It's My Party), She's a Fool, il brano dalle tematiche femministe You Don't Own Me, e Maybe I Know. La cantante fu tra i primi artisti ad avvalersi di Quincy Jones in veste di produttore.

Invece di accettare contratti televisivi e cinematografici, Gore scelse di frequentare il Sarah Lawrence College a Bronxville, nello stato di New York. Tale decisione limitò la sua attività pubblica ai fine settimana e ai periodi di vacanza estiva. Ciononostante, durante la metà anni Sessanta, Gore rimase tra le interpreti di maggiore successo commerciale negli Stati Uniti e in Canada.

Verso la fine del decennio la sua popolarità subì un calo, in concomitanza con lo spostamento del gusto del pubblico verso la musica psichedelica. Il suo ultimo successo fu California Nights (1967), eseguito all'interno di un episodio della serie tv Batman, nel quale l'artista apparve anche in veste di attrice. Successivamente proseguì l'attività dal vivo esibendosi in concerti e spettacoli di cabaret, focalizzandosi inoltre sulla composizione di brani per altri artisti. Fu coautrice di alcune tracce della colonna sonora del film del 1980 Saranno famosi (Fame), ricevendo una candidatura ai Premi Oscar per il brano Out Here on My Own, scritta insieme al fratello Michael e interpretato da Irene Cara.

Nel 2005, dopo una lunga pausa dalle registrazioni in studio, ha pubblicato l'album autoprodotto Ever Since, che ha ottenuto favorevoli riscontri da parte della critica specializzata.

Vita privata Sebbene non avesse rilasciato dichiarazioni pubbliche in merito fino al 2005, Gore ha in seguito precisato che nell'ambiente dello spettacolo il suo orientamento sessuale era già noto da tempo. Ha inoltre dichiarato di aver acquisito piena consapevolezza della propria omosessualità intorno ai vent'anni e di non aver mai sentito la necessità di formalizzare o, al contrario, di occultare la propria dimensione privata. Dal 1980 fino alla morte è stata legata sentimentalmente alla designer di gioielli Lois Sasson.

Il lungometraggio Grace Of My Heart del 1996 include un personaggio, interpretato da Bridget Fonda, parzialmente ispirato alla figura di Gore. A partire dal 2004 l'artista ha inoltre condotto alcune puntate della serie televisiva In the Life, trasmessa da PBS e incentrata sulle tematiche LGBT.

Morte Affetta da un tumore, Lesley Gore è deceduta al Presbyterian Hospital di New York il 16 febbraio 2015, all'età di 68 anni.
